Refective Essay

Introduction

My experience at ACLC started in the 6th grade. What drew my family's attention to this school was the independent learning style, project based curriculum, and small school environment which seemed to be a good fit for me. Since then, I have matured and grown both academically and non academically. I am thankful for all the support I’ve received and understand that my success was aided by the caring facilitators at this school. I hope to use all that I have learned at ACLC to help in my future endeavors.

INTRODUCTION: My experience at ACLC started in the 6th grade. What drew my family's attention to this school was the independent learning style, project based curriculum, and small school environment which seemed to be a good fit for me. PERSONAL QUALITIES, WORK HABITS and ATTITUDES: I haven’t been passionate about school for as long as I can remember. I felt as though I never had the skills or ability to be good at school and I always struggled to stay on track. Over the last few years I feel that I’ve matured and figured out what I need to do to get school work done. Equally important has been the growth in assuming responsibility for the quality of my work. My high self-esteem has helped me to stay positive and optimistic about completing assignments even when I fell behind or had to rush at the end of a semester to get my work completed. Being social and open to meeting new people has also helped me improve academically because it motivated me to want to do better in school.  What has really made the difference for me has been the support that I’ve received from my facilitators and fellow students.  and being able to have help around me was useful.

NEW BASICS:  Although my main struggles academically have stemmed from my lack of interest in English I feel that this is a subject that I have really improved in.  My writing skills are much better and I found that some of the required reading was actually enjoyable. In contrast to English, History has been my favorite subject. I enjoyed learning the context of how our country and the world around us has been molded into what it is today. As far as my speaking skills are concerned, LLC’s have really helped me overcome my reluctance to speak in public.

THINKING and REASONING SKILLS: I learned that I am a visual and kinesthetic learner during my years at ACLC and the project based, hands on curriculum of ACLC helped me better understand the concepts being taught. Understanding how I learn and what I need to make my learning more productive is an important key to succeeding in my future academic career. My dreams for a future career as a professional soccer player drives me to work hard and pushes me to make sure that I find ways to overcome my struggles.

INTERPERSONAL ABILITIES: As I developed academically, I also was developing non academically. I played soccer not only as a hobby but as a way to keep myself motivated and concentrated. I’ve been on many different teams with different styles of play and environment. There was always a diverse group as I played with many different players with many different backgrounds and way of life. Because of soccer I excel in leadership and motivating others and including everyone. I make sure everyone contributes and inspires others to try new things.

TECHNOLOGIES: The project based learning at ACLC makes for must have technology with most assignments. Be it for collaborating on projects through Google Docs, conducting research on one of the many chromebooks available or putting together a presentation with the computers available in the Center, technology has been an essential part of my academic journey. Especially during this distance learning environment, I have been resourceful in the technology that I use to complete my assignments and communicate socially with my friends from school.  My typing has greatly improved and I’ve gotten really good at it.

Vision Statement

Vision Statement

A  life goal I have is to play soccer at the highest level possible. First, I’d like to play soccer at a collegiate level.  Ideally I would attend a D1 school that would offer me a soccer scholarship. Ultimately, my goal is to become a professional soccer player and the dream would be to go to England and play for Manchester United like Marcus Rashford. Both my short term and lifelong goals include soccer but start with a college education.

I mention Marcus Rashford because he is an inspiration to me. He plays for the team I have enjoyed watching for a long time and he not only plays for a great team but he also helps the community around him and all over England. For example, he donates food and money to schools in need which, as a young player, is very admirable. Marcus is someone I aspire to be like, not just as a player but as a person.

The dream of playing in England, at the highest level, comes with travelling to a different country.  Travel is something I am very interested in doing. I want to travel to Europe where I would tour Spain, France, England, Itay, Portugal, and Greece. Not just for their rich culture but many of the worlds best soccer clubs are in those countries.

The types of lifestyle I look forward to having is one of free choice, full of happiness and on the edge of a rockstar lifestyle. A free choice lifestyle is being able to choose what I want by having the knowledge and resources to be a successful contributor to society. A rockstar lifestyle is just living life as it should be to the fullest and never being afraid of a new adventure. With these types of lifestyles I would use my free time to learn some new skills like, how to write with my left hand, learn how to fly a plane, or  take music lessons in guitar or piano.
